Valentine's Day is one holiday that most people either love or hate. Typically people in a relationship, and especially women, are people who are more likely to like Valentine's Day. And single people and men seem to hate it; although there are always exceptions to both scenarios.

When I was growing up I loved Valentine's Day. I thought it was sweet and romantic even though I probably didn't even fully understand what romantic meant. I loved it because school automatically became a fun day with very little that related to our studies to be done! It was a day of yummy snacks and fun activities, and handing out little Valentines to our classmates. I remember each one of us would decorate our shoe "mail" box, hoping that our classmates would fill them up on this special day. And at home my parents would give me a small gift, a card, and some candy. It was indeed a great time.

As I progressed to high school my love of Valentine's Day waned because it became less of a group sport, and more a holiday exclusive to couples. So if you were single or had a boyfriend who really didn't do anything to celebrate, you could easily just skip right past this holiday...there would be no balloons, flowers, candy, or stuffed animals for you, and you would have to oooh and ahh over your friend's gifts while going empty handed.

Then I met my husband. and everything changed. He was always excited, sometimes even a little too excited, when this holiday would come around. I could usually expect a nice piece of jewelry, perfume, or flowers along with a beautiful card, during those first years. But over time I begin to realize that I didn't even need those tokens of love because I experienced it daily. Also, I began to think of the impracticality of some of the gifts I received over the years. Flowers will fade, chocolates will just make me plumper, expensive jewelry will break the budget, and perfume is definitely something one should choose for themselves. Yes, as I became an adult, I found myself becoming more practicl than romantic about this holiday.

Today I am still a sucker for a beautiful card, and I still love to give them to my husband and my friends as much as I love receiving them.. But I've become more smart (sneaky) about directing my husband in the direction of specific items I desire for Valentine's Day. You didn't really think that last beautiful Tyler he gave me got here by accident, now did you?

We play this little "game" where I leave a note that I'd love to have item x (doll, outfit for doll, doll furniture - well, you get my drift) located on a particular website -- with the url added at the end. Or I sometimes just leave my computer for a bit while it is strategically on an item I'd love to have. Believe me, my dolls and I have never been happier!! Take this tip and you might feel the same.

Now on to the purpose of this blog. The shop owners of CDS are offering up our traditioal Valentine cards and we hope you will enjoy them. It is one of the cards we use throughout the year to especially let you kow how much we appreciate each and every one of you! Judy O'Connell presents “Wild Romance”. It fits Barbie® and similar sized dolls. Included is a red faux fur swing jacket with leopard print lining; and a sheath dress of leopard print cotton lined in red china silk. It features a square neckline and comes with a red vinyl belt. Just in time for Valentine's Day, Frances Weir offers a trio of sassy satin outfits, sewn especially for your Silkstone dolls. The three "Vogue" styles are constructed from red and white and red heart print satin, and together form the "Silkstone Valentine Sweethearts." The first outfit is a two piece play suit that features a collared, sleeveless blouse and fully lined capris slacks with red satin bows at the knee. Valentine's Heart is Karen Daniels presentation. It is a cotton sheath style fitted dress with coordinating hat and matching belt. The dress is fully lined with a back placket closure with 3 snaps and a hand stitched hem. The matching belt has a tiny gold circular buckle. Ellowyne's sinamy hat with matching hatband has a pink silk flower, white rose, white rose bud, pink wild rose, and a large irridescent pink bow to finish it off. Tyler's hat also has a matching hatband, pink silk flowers, baby's breath and a little pink grosgrain ribbon with a tiny pink heart in the centre of the bow.

Just stopping by to give you an update on the prize given during our Holiday Happening, and to tell you about some special events our members have been involved with. Our winner, Nilsa Donelan, has received her prize!

Anna Castanes -- Nilsa wrote and told me she just loved what Anna sent her! In fact. she was so excited she made a special diorama for me to share with you. Congratulations, Nilsa, and our thanks to Anna Castanes of Somethings Old, Somethings New on Designer Drive, for providing this lovely prize.

Elisa Cetera -- During late 2011, Elisa Cetera, shop owner of PetraElise Fashion Doll Couture on Main Street, was proud to offer an exclusive fashion to members of Doll Divas. If you are not familiar with DD, it is one of the fave doll talk boards for savvy doll fashionistas. Designed for the smaller busted girls such as Poppy Parker, Nu.Face and BFMC, the strapless mini was available in five color/patterns of silk brocade imported from England. Included here is a picture of one of the versions.

Rosy Bazile -- December 2011 found Rosy Bazile of L'Atelier de Rosy on Designer Drive busy participating in the Third Annual Black Doll Convention in Paris, France. This is the first Black Doll Convention held in France, and it was organized by Rosine Modor. Rosy feels it is important to participate in this convention because it helps acquaint people with the history, as well as the different kinds, of Black dolls.

The convention portrays a lot of traditional (Martinique, Guadeloupe, African) black dolls as well as the modern ones Rosy contributes. I'm glad she brought this to my attention because this was one convention I wasn't familiar with...and I don't think any of us have found a doll convention we don't like! Pictured here are dolls shown at the convention. The Martinique and Guadeloupe traditional dresses were made by Rosy's friend, Hélène Svahnstrom, and the modern ones were made by Rosy.

Hilda Westervelt -- If you were lucky enough to snag a copy of the now sold out WINTER 2011 issue of Fashion Doll Quarterly's magazine titled STYLE! perhaps you've already spotted the great pattern provided by Hilda Westervelt of Bellissima Couture on Main Street. You may still get the opportunity to make Joan's wiggle dress from her pattern but you'll need to hurry! I found some available over at Angelic Dreamz, and some of the local brick and mortar book stores still have it!

Larraine Elcock -- She wears a lot of hats including being the Tech for CDS' website, and running several stores on Main Street including Fringe Elements, Auction Fever, Azone, and PB Factory.. She also chairs the Couture Doll Design Challenge. and is bringing it back with a brand new look -- CDDC4 will officially begin again February 4th! This year the contestants will be competing at three levels: Beginners, Intermediates, and Professionals.

Two new judges will also be joining their returning Resident Judge Rob Thompson -but they are yet to be disclosed. You'll be able to keep up with this competition through the website, and on the CDDC blog. If you would like to enter the competition please email Larraine with a short bio and some photos of your work - but hurry! She'll only be taking applications through January 15th.

IDEX will be celebrating "A World of Quality Collectibles and Playthings" at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld® in Orlando, Florida on January 26-29, 2012. The exhibitor list is filled with doll manufacturers and artists from all over the world. For a complete list, and all other information about this event you will want to visit their website. And, if you're going to attend this year, be sure to meet the three very talented and nice CDS shop owners who will be there; Terry Barner, Durelle Brown, and George Gonzalez. Here's some information about them.

Terry Barner -- owner of Off the Wall by Terrkat on Designer Drive, has joined Horsman Limited's Design Team recently, and has already submitted three face paints for Vita for production and has a fourth in progress. He is excited that he will also have an opportunity to create a whole doll from top to bottom for them, although he's not sure what direction he'll look to for creating this doll yet. Terry can be found in the Horsman booth where you will also find all of the fabulous things they have on display this year. For more information about Horsman, Ltd. you can check out their website.

Durelle Brown -- Travel in Style with her at IDEX. This Chic Indulgence on Main Street shop owner will be giving only one workshop there this year, so take advantage of this opportunity to meet her! You can take her workshop on Friday, January 27th from 9 am till noon, and for a reasonable fee you'll learn how to make your own vintage-inspired three-piece luggage set for 16 inch dolls that includes a pullman, train case, and hat box. Complete information on this and all workshops can be found on the IDEX website. You might also find her around the Doll Reader booth if she has time. She will have a pattern in their new pattern book - so you'll want to be on the lookout for that soon.

George Gonzalez is the owner of Angelic Dreamz on CDS' Couture Court, and at 13 Niagara St. in the Historic Downtown district of Canandaigua, NY. He will be at IDEX showing both the newest and existing JAMIEshow collections including the St. Tropez Collection, the new Rooted Wig Collection, JAMIEshow Shoes and Accessories, as well as their newest introduction, MADAME Eshe!

George said AD will be introducing new dolls such as a new mini collection and an Exclusive IDEX doll - and perhaps a few things they were still working on when I caught up with him! Find all the fun with George at AD's Booth 301, where dolls and other items will be available to purchase and take home.

Wow, everyone has been so busy - but I'm still going to check what's going on over at CDS - I've heard a rumor they are already working on their Valentine lines! Happy shopping, fashionistas!

Visual Eye Candy Ends Our Year!

I woke up this morning all excited! First of all, my decorating is done! Whew!! The cooking is underway, some packages wrapped...

Oh, but most of all the reason I'm here!!! I was excited to get to announce the winner of Anna's contest........drum roll please...the winner is........
Nilsa Donelan!! Hooray!

Nobody got all of our questions right but that was okay - remember our contest instructions only said "To enter, answer the questions down below as best you can" -- it never said your answers had to be correct!! But for those who wondered about the answers:

Answers: #1 Our first shop opened was Sweet Creations of Main Street. Connie Casteel is officially our first subscriber, and the first one to be ready to open. She also keeps a great inventory for a lot of dolls - well worth a peek in if you haven't yet!

#2 The last shop owner to open on CDS was Frances Weir. She worked very hard to be open in time for our Holiday Happening, and specializes in couture clothing for 1/6 scale; primarily Barbie and Fashion Royalty.

#3 The members of our FTK list helped name Couture Court and Designer Drive. A list of names was presented, and they voted on it. If you'd like to be part of naming our next street, be sure to sign on to our Yahoo Group!

Now if the winner will please email me I should be done with my work for this year. Yes, I'm officially off through January 1. But have no worries about CDS - I do monitor my emails daily, so feel free to contact me if you have something that demands immediate attention.

Now on with the fun stuff! Recently I took a "stroll" through CDS as I'm often known to do, because I wanted to do a few more interviews with our shop owners. I am having a lot of fun really getting to "know" them through this process, and I hope you are, too!

My wandering took me to Couture Court where I caught up with Deanna Torigian. I wanted all of you to meet her because I wanted people to know CDS is interested in catering to the fashion needs of all kinds of fashion dolls. Remember, Cissy, Miss Revlon, and other vintage (and reproductions of these dolls) NEED new clothes, too!!

Babette's Doll Fashions on Couture Court

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

Deanna: I am a hairstylist by trade. I owned my own Salon for over 20 years. When I sold my Salon four years ago I didn't know what to do with my time. My aunt sent me some dolls that she had saved over the years. She remembered that I loved dolls as a child and decided to pass them to me. I wasn't sure what to do with them.

Some of them were in bad shape. Bad hair is something I can't ignore. I began restoring the dolls she sent. I had to learn about them. I decided to make copies of their original clothes. It was more challenging than I expected and I was hooked!

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?
Deanna: I loved dolls as a child, especially Barbie. My first Barbie was brunette TNT with real eyelashes.

I became a hairstylist. Art, fashion, and making women beautiful have naturally been my life.

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself and then create fashion art for sale?

Deanna: Once I started sewing I didn't want to stop. So I didn't and I sold what I made.

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

Deanna: My aunt was originally the seamstress in our family. She made my dolls and I clothes when I was young. I was blessed to get her old pattern collection. The very patterns she used to make the things that she gave to me.

Sadly, she passed away last February. She is thought of almost every day as I use her patterns. I have made clothes from these patterns for my nieces as well. Passing on and creating a tradition.

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

Deanna: My Aunt started this "ball rolling". I get inspiration everywhere, what I see in the stores, what I see on fashionable people, fabrics, patterns (old and new) and the dolls themselves. I have so many ideas and not enough time to try them all. I completely love creating doll designs, I want to learn all I can. The designs I produce are pure pleasure for me.

Unfortunately, after that answer Deanna had to roll on herself - what a hectic schedule all of us have during the holiday season!!

Next I thought I would backtrack to Main Street. I had heard that perhaps John Prewitt and his lovely wife Cindy were passing out eggnog and gingerbread cookies this afternoon - hum, what a great "excuse" to meet them....and see their Holiday Happening fireplace in person!!

As a lot of you know, John makes incredible furniture for your doll's dioramas - well just wait and see. Let's go in and talk to John now.......

JC Dream Designs on Main Street

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

John: The real me? Well, designing doll furniture is a part time job for me. I have a full time career in IT, as a technology architect. I am a husband and father with a fabulous wife, and two wonderful children. I also have four of the most awesome grandchildren in the world. All of this makes for a challenging balancing act but it also makes life fun! My goal is to keep it all in perspective and do my best to keep family first.

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?

John: It started when my wife and I attended our first doll convention. It was the 2nd IFDC held in Irving, Texas. We met some of the nicest and most talented people I had ever seen. The creativity we saw was off the charts. I have always enjoyed creating things with my hands. And working in IT does not allow for that type of creative outlet. We went back to IFDC the next year and I decided I wanted to try creating something. I tried my hand at face repainting, and at sewing outfits but those options were not quite right for me. Designing furniture in a smaller scale and creating diorama accessories turned out to be the perfect fit.

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself then transition to creating fashion art offered for sale?
John: I actually started making doll furniture and diorama accessories for my wife. She was having a hard time finding items she liked so she asked me to give it a shot. I started out with a fairly simple design and built from there. Pretty soon the people in our doll club were asking me to design things for them, and then we decided to see if there was a market for my creations. The response has been excellent, and I think our customers are extremely satisfied with the items they have chosen.

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

John: The biggest influence on my work has definitely been my wife. She was my original muse, and she has a really good eye for style and color. She is my best advisor and critic. Before I started trying to make furniture to sell I did some online research to see what other doll furniture designers were doing. From that research came two goals: find my own niche and make items that looked as realistic and in scale as possible.

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

John: For furniture most of my inspiration comes from designs I see for people. I occasionally try to duplicate a design I see, but most often I end up adapting it to something similar but different. Looking for diorama accessory ideas is a skill I think we can all develop over time. When we go shopping I now find myself looking at everything in the store to see how it might work in 1/6 scale. So items such as placemats become flooring or napkin rings become lamp shades. The possibilities are endless!

Blogmeister: For people who would like to create their own fashion art, would you have any words of inspiration or advice?

John: I think everyone has a spark of creativity and with so many avenues that allow expression of that creativity there is certain to be something you will enjoy doing. I believe that doing something you really enjoy is extremely important because it will help you stick with it until you achieve your goals.

Blogmeister: Lastly, what's up for you right now?

John: I am starting to make some 16" furniture. I have converted a few of my 1/6 scale designs and now I am looking to do some new designs that may only be available in 16". Who knows, creating for even bigger dolls might be something to look into as well.

Wow, what incredible news - but, unfortunately, this was the last I was to get! It was now closing time, and John and Cindy were ready to go home. Where does the time fly when you're visiting nice people!?!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU!!

Do the holidays have you running in circles?? Are you finding yourself angry?? Is stress in abundance? Well, I'm no physician, but this layman can tell you, you need to snap out of it!! None of this can come to any good, and I don't want a one of you to be sick over the holidays!! Soooooo, it wouldn't hurt to just look over my tips; now would it!?!

Traffic: More people are shopping, so there's bound to be more traffic - so allow for it whenever you go out. Don't let a fender bender ruin it for you or the other driver. And, if someone is rude, don't stoop to their level - smile and go on - and take down their license plate and post it on Craig's List!! Just kidding!

Clutter: More people eat fast food while shopping, so there seems to be an abundance of clutter. I even saw some food wrappers in a toy drive drop-off box the other day. Sure it upset me, but just until I got the clutter to the right place. It took me minutes to eliminate this being MY problem! Maybe their Mama didn't teach them any better!!

Baking overload: If you love baking this probably isn't a problem. If not, you really need to control this and other cooking tasks you take on during the holidays. Don't raise your hand for one of the four courses in a progressive dinner - instead be the one who brings the bread and butter, or drinks, or even items to set the table. No one will ever know you're not kin to Martha!

Fat phobia: With all the extra food floating around, you may start to feel your clothes getting a wee bit tighter. But it doesn't have to happen if you work at eating smaller portions every day - save the splurging for the "real" special occasions. Jump on the treadmill when you have time - practice dashing away like Santa's reindeer, and you'll be able to dance the night away come New Year's Eve! And ALWAYS start your latest diet on January 2nd!!

No time for yourself, or worse, for your dolls! Yikes! For me this is the easiest to conquer. Do a little every day...for at least one of you. Steal away to do something you want to do - like viewing your Christmas cards down below, or seeing what's new at CDS! But who wants to leave the comfort of your home when you can experience retail heaven with just a few clicks of your mouse? With fashion blogs and enough beautiful photographs to hook any fashionista, online stores have been virtually outdoing their physical counterparts -- and at a much quicker rate than any brick and mortar store could accomplish -- ever since the dot.com market exploded onto the scene.

Isn't it great then that this trend has finally caught on for our dolls? I don't know about where you live, but down here in Houstonville finding doll clothes used to be a big ol' chore -- nothing resembling any kind of heaven for sure!!

While very different, each of these shop owners has one thing in common. They have a desire to design and make quality products their customers will be satisfied in owning. They also work to ensure confidence in their clients by providing great customer service. So come along and meet someone new today. Find out what they do, and watch their ideas grow. CINDI STOWELL, CINDI'S DOLL APPAREL

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

Cindi: The “real” person behind the doll biz is a musician that now teaches private music lessons to kids. I have a wonderful job and I completely adore my students! I even had one of my students that knows I love to sew, show me her book bag that she had sewn. She wanted to give me the rest of her material from her project to make a doll dress for my dolls. It was very touching!

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?

Cindi: I have always had a love for dolls but I became disinterested after years of collecting. After my husband and I moved from Las Vegas, I thought now was my opportunity to do something different. I thought I would open my own doll store. So, I remembered going to the bookstore and looking at a Haute Doll Magazine to see what kind of dolls were out there to buy. I fell in love with the dolls on the cover and started looking for how I could buy my first BJD doll. What I liked about the BJDs was that the possibilities of creating their look was endless. You can change their wigs and eyes and they are dolls that are meant to be played with. I knew then that I wanted to sew and make clothes for them. I started to look for patterns that I could sew and found a few very good designers.

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself then transition to creating fashion art offered for sale?

Cindi: I have always had a love for sewing. I started with sewing
clothes for me. I loved making jackets for myself and designing clothes for me to wear. Then I got into making teddy bears. The funnest part about making a teddy bear was when the eyes went in the bear and suddenly the bear came to life and had character and personality. Once I discovered the BJDsm I haven't stopped creating a wardrobe for them.

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

Cindi: No, I have to admit that I have never been a “designer” monger. All of my girlfriends talk about designer names when they go shopping but for me it’s always been about what I like and don’t like and not who the designer is.

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

Cindi: I love to look at fashion by googling the internet. There are all kinds of great inspirations and fun pictures to look at. I love fashion and sewing books too and lately, I’ve been into the Victorian fashion and the steampunk fashion. I have always loved movies depicting those time periods.

Blogmeister: For people who would like to create their own fashion art, would you have any words of inspiration or advice?

Cindi: I’ve been most challenged by studying and studying and studying again other people’s creations and attention to detail. I feel very challenged when I see some of the great works of doll fashion that people create. It always amazes me. So, my advice would be to look at the clothes you like and pay attention to all the fine detail.

Blogmeister: Lastly, what's up for you right now?

Cindi: I have been completely absorbed by Victorian fashion and bustle dresses. I have so many ideas and just not enough time to sit down and sew. I found a wonderful book by John R. Burbidge entitled Les petites Dames de Mode: An Adventure in Design and I have been very inspired by his Victorian dresses. I also finally have my MSD BJDs back from a wonderful face-up artist and I am ready to sew for them too.

TERRY BARNER, OFF THE WALL by Terrkat

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

Terry: Off The Wall Terrkat is a name I thought would encompass a very wide range of artistic offerings. My first love in doll customization is re-painting but sometimes I have to explore different aspects which leads to some interesting and unexpected items. Always doll related, I have offered furniture and fashion accessories. You will never know what might turn up.

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?

Terry: This started sometime around 1997. My wife Kathy, was enamored with Barbie collectibles, and then Gene by Mel Odom, and Ashton Drake galleries came along. I think we attended most doll shows, and as many doll stores close to home as we heard about. We drove 5 hours once to visit a doll show in search of anything that we could spend money on, and we usually did. At one of these shows I found an 18 inch Pocahontas and, although the face was a bit cartoonish, I was lured by the possibilities. She was my first “victim” I experimented with painting over the old paint, applying eyelashes and then, I took the final plunge and removed all of the old paint. It forced me to learn how to repaint the face into what I wanted to see. I was hooked.

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself then transition to creating fashion art offered for sale?

Terry: I did only create for me and my wife at first. Then as I got better, I thought maybe some of my work would sell so we tried that at a doll show in Austin and Although I had to work my “real” job at the time, my wife did quite well selling what she and I had created.

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

Terry: My wife was at the time and occasionally still is, my best and worst critic. It was good to have a different set of eyes pointing out what could be better and what was really good. She is still my best and most honest critic.

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

Terry: I find inspiration from many sources. Movies, television, magazines and I like to see what others create. An inspiration can come from anywhere.

Blogmeister: For people who would like to create their own fashion art, would you have any words of inspiration or advice?

Terry: Don’t give up on something before you start. You may not like your first attempts at something but there is no substitute for practice. Try new things, if you have the passion, use the energy to push you. You will find a great deal of satisfaction in what you learn about yourself and your abilities.

Blogmeister: Lastly, what's up for you now?

Terry: I have no plans to stop creating. I have some very interesting opportunities before me now.

ROCKIN' THE RUNWAY - DFNO 2011

Fashion's Night Out, an annual initiative that takes place in 17 countries across the globe this year, began in 2009 as a way to encourage consumers to support the fashion industry during a tough economic climate. The September 8, 2011 Fashion's Night Out rocked catwalks worldwide, and had people lining up everywhere to see which retailers took the time to create fun, fashionable events this year! Over 1000 retailers participated in NYC alone, but they were not alone. Over 250 cities across the USA celebrated FNO's third glorious year!

From Mexico to Milan FNO reigned supreme because international expansion was this year's order of business. These countries were well represeted: Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germay Greece, India, Italy, Japan ("All of Vogue’s top editors from around the globe gathered for this one!"), Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Kingdom ("We danced to Madonna at Christian Dior on New Bond Street"). All over the world shops featured refreshments, djs spinning music, fashion shows and more. And all was free to the public who sipped champagne as they perused some of the most wonderful designer's fall collecitons.

Oh my! If I'd have only known there was even a celebration in my neighborhood, I'd have been yelling road trip to my bestest doll buddy, and we'd have been in the middle of it!! Well, a girl can find mahvelous inspiration for future doll creations as well as pick up some things for herself - what's not to like about FNO??

And what's not to like about DFNO - Doll Fashion Night Out - CDS' version of FNO for the diminutive diva!?! NADA! Just plenty to enjoy - and you can still do it in your pajamas!

This marks our 2nd year, and fifteen shop owners have committed to "showing" in this year's event - and they will be featured. But others have been busy adding items also - so shop the whole mall - you do NOT want to miss out on any dolly delights!

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Ahhhhhhhhhhh......Beautiful Villains, those campy, deliriously mean, and vivacious creatures who sliver into our books and onto our silver screens with such mischief we find ourselves hopelessly mesmerized - who could be better candidates for our latest CDS Happening?

Some of the most popular Halloween costumes are based on what these "hotties" wear for a reason, and that reason is because they are often on people's minds at this time of the year. And why not? No one really relates to the murder and/or mayhem of it all when they don their classic outfits to play their famous roles one more time.

However, our designers weren't to just design costumes because that would never work in designing couture clothing. Instead they were given the task of designing clothes for their favorite villains, clothing that would let your dolls portray these characters....kind of. The clothing they were challenged to create for these divas was to be designed in a modern, couture "I can wear that any day of the week and be villainously beautiful" kind of style.

And, since many of the popular magazines use these bad girls in their October issues also, we thought we'd showcase these entries in their own little, individual magazines. Toward this end these shop owners not only needed to submit pictures and descriptions of their ensembles, they were also encouraged to suggest their magazine title, and some article titles that might appear there, too.

So, first I'll tell you something about their choices, and then you can proceed to see the final product – there will be a link.

Pauline Lyngard, BW Designs

Marquise Isbelle de Merteull

With her portrayal of this character not only did Glenn Close give one of her best performances, she also helped the producers of Dangerous Liasions make this adaptation of the famous 17th century French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a relevant and fascinating piece of cinema. The scheming Madame de Merteull is amorally set on bending everyone to her own will, no matter the method or the cost. She delightfully fascinates us as her ego, vantiy, intrigue, and war between the genders is exposed. Swooning passion, icy stares, and hushed, measured speeches are characteristics that make us scurry for popcorn before it begins lest we have to tear ourselves from the screen even for a minute during this performance.

Lana Turk, Doll Couture by Lana

The Snow Queen

One of the most influential of all fairy tale archetypes seems to me to be the Snow Queen. This fearsome character was invented by Hans Christian Andersen in 1844, and came to the widescreen as a delightful animated Soviet film in 1957 that continues to run on YouTube today. She is the absolute embodiment of evil, a kidnapper of children, and freezer of hearts who continues to inspire modern-day authors. Because, even though the Snow Queen story has many characters that represent evil, this main character is the most mesmerizing. There is always something to be said for a hauntingly beautiful villain who conjures up both evil and magic - a beautiful villain such as the Snow Queen.

Karen Kolkman, Kolkman Kreations

The Evil Queen

Yes, she's beautiful, jealous and vindictive, and a lethal lady who makes us all perk up when we first glimpse her pondering her beauty in front of her also-evil Magical Mirror in Disney's classic, Snow White. Much like the Evil Stepmother in Cinderella, she uses Snow White as her own personal housekeeper, but that is where the similarities cease. Cindy's Stepmom never comes close to evoking the animosity of this Evil Queen! When her favorite Mirror Man tells her one day Snow White is the new IT girl around the castle, this Evil Queen cries out that she is definitely not gonna accept that! So when her manslave fails to carry out her murderous plot, she resorts to making herself a much-less beautiful witch to finish her plan. Its not to that witchy aspect of this character that our designer was asked to design - thank goodness!

Gayle Chavez, Oohlalaz

Catherine Tramell

One of the most campy characters of the bunch is an unlikely psycho-killer, Catherine Tramell, portrayed in the film Basic Instinct by Sharon Stone. Released in 1992, this film had a femme fatale star character who set the model for the many psycho killer scenarios that have been developed to date. Dear Catherine was called "...one of the most evil characters ever created, on Hannibal Lecter's level" in an early review by a French critique. Unlike Hannibal, she is able to use her feminine wiles to manipulate everyone around her for her own amusement. Add to this the fact that she also enjoys killing people, and you immediately know why the American Film Institute put her on their Best Villains list. Thank goodness she'll never end up on a real Most Wanted poster!

Elizabeth Fenton, Nasha's Doll Boutique

Fatima Blush

Another of our favorite beautiful villains, Fatima Blush, also relied on her femininity to exact her desired outcome. Even the author of the Bond film, Never Say Never Again, Ian Fleming, wrote "Her appearance in tight-fitting black rubber suiting will make the audiences swoon." And swoon we did when the ravishing Barbara Carrera stepped out of the wings to play this over-the-top evil diva. From her initial appearance to her demise, she plays at dominating Bond. Unfortunately, this is a task she'll never achieve because the dastardly evil Blush inevidibly became the first Bad Bond Girl to be killed by Bond face-to-face.

Terry Barner, Off The Wall by Terrkat

Ursula

If you're looking for trouble you've come to the right place; if you're looking for help don't rely on this face! Yes, she has a face only a mother can love, but there's something about it that makes people trust her, and something about it that makes her qualify as a beautiful villain. Ursula is the nemesis of Ariel as she makes her debut in The Little Mermaid, but it's not from her lack of trying to be a diva. Hand in hand with her two trusted eel-accomplices, she works it so she can capture any poor, unfortunate sole who comes to her looking for help. She's a nasty one to deal with, indeed, so you'd be wise not to enter into a deal with her because she has no intention of making good on any deal she might make!

George Gonzalez, Angelic Dreamz

Odile

It should have been realized during the first appearance of The Lake of the Swans by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, that there was some evil attached to the ballerina known as Odette/Odile. The ballet, later known as Swan Lake, and adapted from a Russian folk tale, was performed initially in 1877 to less than stellar reviews. Its lead performer, Anna Sobeshchanskaya, was also wrongly accused of theft. Today this is one of the most revered ballets, and it weaves a tale of magic and enchantment. It reveals the evilness of our final beautiful villain, Odile, who has an evil scheme to ensure Odette remains in the swan form cast onto her by Odile's unknowing accomplice, the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. In the end good does prevail but Odette and her beloved Siegfried must realize their forever love in heaven. It's wicked, and evil, and an oh so beautiful story with an equally beautiful villain we love to hate.

Summer at CDS is rather Steamy!

This may be the shortest blog I've ever written. Why, you ask. Because I think our article in the November 2011 DOLLS magazine says it all. Those of you who subscribe to their online version of this magazine can also view what is written - it's on pages 27-32!

And all of YOU can view the Steampunk challenge featured in there on this blog and on our site for our Challenges and Happenings! Look for outfits still available to start showing up in our shops during the first part of September.

You'll want this copy of DOLLS magazine for sure! Not only does it feature our Steampunk Challenge, it also includes some neat tutorials from our shop owners! Plus lots of other neat articles are in there including Extreme Makeover, Dollmaking Down Under, and an insightful article about the latest Horsman offerings. DOLLS Magazine looks to be another great magazine choice for Fashion Doll lovers, and we're happy to be featured there!

Now, on with the Steampunk challenge. First up is our winner - Karen Kolkman. This was a juried challenge judged by one of the resident judges of our sister site, Couture Doll Design Challenge, Tom Courtney. Thanks to Tom for taking time out of his busy schedule to do this for us! Congratulations, Karen!!

Karen Kolkman's risque lady dreams of flying high above the clouds! If it was up to her, she'd be piloting a steam-powered spaceship, high above all of us. She definitely be traveling to a wonderful art gallery where everyone is fashionable. Lucky she's not traveling today. She might not even be able to fly 'cuz she'd be a modern day flight risk with all those buckles, for sure!

Her ensemble was military style...in a Victorian sort of way. This featured a sexy bodice with two lines of gold buttons, and was made of wool and embroidered lace. The whole look was completed with industrial-style jewelry. And, believe me, this lady was ready for anything - see all the detailed accoutrements that were used to consolidate this look.

Lana also contributed to the makeover theme of DOLLS with her shoe tutorial. She share the shoes she made for an entry in our sister site, Couture Doll Design Challenge.

She took a page out of Amelia Earhart's fashion journal in ceating her Punk'd Steampunk time traveler. Even her skirt declares Amelia's world headline!

Her magic necklace and short shirt also speak to the futuristic tone of this outfit. This is an outfit that is as fashion trendy today as it would have been for Amelia!

She explains her outfit as extremely sophisticated and called on her feminine hat accessory to primarily convey her look. Not a fan of punky steampunk, thiese hat adornments such as keys, watch face, and trims are all very feminine.

Silver and black are often used for sophisticated outfits, and this one is no exception. It echoes the black leather used in making the hat.

Her feminine Eco-Victorian entry speaks to the conservatist swoen to protect and defend her flying feather friennds in a dress that could also be worn today.

This ensemble offers unexpected touches that can be protective as well as practical, such as her leather corset defined as outerwear. And the coloring and grace of the lines of this creation remind us of her bird friends.

She created a bedroom ideal for a Steampunk Aviator. Using her own favorite colors, her sprinkling of gears and a picture of a Zepplin on the headboard cleary demonstrate her preferences.

The lady on the coverlet speaks to the Victoianism of Stempunk. Ah, dreamland take me away to this faraway land!!

Her garb represents traditional Steampunk looks that include Victorian mixed with gears and some scifi. Historial fashion is often this artist's forte so it was relatively easy for her to do a Victorian silhouette that she modernized.

Her top hat, qulted corset, and bustled mini skirt add charming touches to the overall look. And you'll want to be sure to check out her tutorial in DOLLS for her top hat. It even includes a pattern to make it simple for you to duplicate.

And last is mine - not really an entry - as management I don't qualify. But occasionally it's fun to just play along! Fun is what we're all here for - right?? And I had fun, indeed, creating this Cowgirl Steampunk outfit!

….Summer, to me, is a time when we least think of fashion. We are content to be casual with ourselves, and this can even filter over to our attitude about our dolls. We languish in a state of ennui; playing with our kids, running with our pets, or even barbequing with the hubster. We just don’t have the energy or the time to “play” ‘round the clock – we have to have a reprise even from the wonderful joy our doll and doll fashion collecting brings - and summer is it!

But soon the lazy days of summer will be over, and cool crisp air will return leaving us scurrying for a new fashion and a new coat for ourselves, perhaps – but for sure for our dollies! At that time we will be especially happy that everyone didn’t approach summer as we did. We’ll be happy for those who worked diligently to bring us their new Fall lines.

It will be then that I’ll look to CDS for some new doll fashions, and I hope you will, too. And one shop you won’t want to overlook is Sweet Creations. Its shop owner, Connie Casteel, makes wonderful offerings for all kinds of dolls. Residing on Main Street, her shop is one of the first that opened there – and I’m so glad it did. Check out my recent interview for more information about this very nice and interesting lady.

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

Connie: I have been the wife for almost 41 years to a most wonderful man. I am also the mother of two beautiful daughters, and a grandmother to four darling grandchildren! But I still feel very young at heart, anyway!

I worked 25 years at a single company after my husband left military service and we finally settled in one place. I left that employment at the end of 2004, and am quite content to stay at home and sew!

Sewing and reading have been at the top of my ‘hobbies list’ as long as I can remember. Little did I know that one day my sewing skills could turn into a ‘tiny’ business!

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?

Connie: In 2000 my oldest daughter suggested I sew a few Barbie clothes and sell them on eBay. eBay was something I had never heard of, but she assured me I would have no trouble selling my work. I began with Barbie fashions, and was pleasantly surprised to find my work so well received! I mean, sure I knew I put my heart into it, but how could they tell from a picture?? I was also surprised to find that the majority of people were not buying the fashions for children, but for themselves! Who knew there were so many doll collectors in the world!

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself then transition to creating fashion art offered for sale?

Connie: Yes, I did. The desire to learn had always been there below the surface as I watched my mom and both grandmas sew as I was growing up. I had a very strict (thank you Mrs. Harden!) Home Ec teacher when I was in Junior High who helped further pique my interest in sewing because she insisted on doing things correctly and without shortcuts. I also had a great Home Ec teacher in High School. Between the five of them – relatives and teachers - I learned to make clothing for myself, and sometimes my little sister was treated to an outfit….if she wasn’t annoying me ;o)

When my girls were younger I sewed for them and their dolls, as well as sewing for myself and my husband. When they outgrew dolls, I sewed mainly for the girls, including their wedding dresses and all of their female attendant’s ensembles..

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

Connie: I would credit my daughter, Jenny, for giving me direction in styles and fabrics in the beginning and for several years until her own motherly duties took up more of her time. My husband also contributed with his knack at selecting and/or critiquing fabric selections. Jenny was also very insistent about my photos being just so, and my skills improved quickly!

Then along came Gene Marshall, a gift from my daugher, and my attention was immediately focused on sewing for grown-up dolls! The rest is history.

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

Connie: Everywhere! I unconsciously keep an eye out, and realize that when I am looking at someone or something, I find myself saying (to myself or anyone in the area), ‘Oh! That would be cute as….’ or ‘Oh! Wouldn’t that make a nice…...’. It may be a style, a color, the way a fabric feels or drapes, or just my imagination running away with me. ;o) I tend to see the outfit before I actually see who is wearing it, and have little sketches and notes of fashions I would like to create everywhere. Now if I could just find enough time to do them all!

The internet is also a fantastic resource for information, not only for current styles and artists, but for researching past years and specific eras.

Blogmeister: For people who would like to create their own fashion art, would you have any words of inspiration or advice?

Connie: Find what you do best, then do it! I know, easier said than done, but it can be very frustrating to pull yourself in too many directions at once. You have to be willing to put yourself into your work, stick with it and master what you do best. Be vigilante in the details. After that, branching out is easier and will be less frustrating. It will show in your work and you will create little masterpieces that will make you proud!

I also think we are harder on ourselves than any other critic, so don’t be too hard on yourself as you learn. Remain open to hearing the opinion of others. Their opinion doesn’t have to become your opinion, but someone may make a very interesting point that will help you in another endeavor along the way.

Blogmeister: Lastly, what's up for you right now?

Connie: My main focus has been on ball jointed dolls (BJDs) for the past couple of years, but I get commission requests for many of the other dolls who model for me and sew for them regularly as well. As long as I can sew, I am happy!

Last year I got my first Kaye Wiggs doll, an 18” BJD portraying an age of about 9-12 years old. Shortly after I saw a Fairyland Little Fee Leah, and fell in love with her, so she moved to my house. She is a 10.5” BJD, who was soon followed by another tiny 11” BJD named Millie, also by Kaye Wiggs. I have really enjoyed creating young fashions for these girls, which is quite a change from those grown-up fashions. I believe it reminds me of when my girls were young! :o)

See, she has something for just about everyone!

But if you’re not quite ready to give up on summer, a good way to rev up your inner fashion diva, is to laze around the pool with a good book. If your heart belongs to fictition, perhaps you’ll enjoy:

Fashion Babylon by Imogen Edwards Jones = Follow a fictional London-based designer over a six month period. It opens the day after their runway show, and closes the day of their next show, six months later. The enticing thing about this book is that the author claims that everything is true eve though the designer is fictionalized, stating that "only the names have been changed to protect the guilty". This book explains every little detail that goes into producing a collection, and it's a fun and fascinating read. You'll learn about the mark-ups at stores, the process of hiring models for the show, what it takes to get a good review, and a lot more!

And for the history buff, may I suggest:

The End of Fashion by Teri Agins- Take a look at fashion from a business perspective, exploring all aspects of the industry including manufacturing, retailing, licensing, and image making, through this well-researched book. It explains the beginning and the "end" of Paris couture houses, as well as the rivalry behind the runway, Giorgio Armani's success with Hollywood, and much more. Agins examines the fundamental changes in the fashion industry, and "how marketing changed the clothing business forever". If you’re interested in learning more about how fashion came to be what it is today NEEDS to pick up a copy of this book pronto!

Poetry and beauty combine for a win - Congrats TERRY BARNER!

Ah, how do I love thee…let me count the ways! Some of us at Couture Doll Shop had fun this summer counting the ways we love to dress our dolls for romantic interludes.

And so did our viewers, according to the nice comments you included when you voted for the winner of our Romance Challenge.

Thanks so much – and thanks to Fashion Doll Quarterly for including our contest in their magazine! And thanks to Angelic Dreamz for providing the prize!

Lots played, but there could be only one winner! This prize was claimed by the talented Terry Barner!! Hopefully we’ll get his full profile soon.

For now, I’ll just say for those of you who have missed his work, you are in for a treat. Just saunter on over to our Designer Drive where you will find his repaints and fashions in his shop – Off The Wall by Terrkat. He’s a genuinely nice guy who will welcome your visit! Congratulations Terry!!!

Speaking of romance...

When you see the work of others that you're attracted to, do you instantly fall in love? Well, sometimes I do! And with the ease of the internet, I seem to find more and more artists I'm infatuated with!!

But I'm happy that I really do not actually want to "be" those artists, nor do I feel I want to create their type of work. Rather, it just gives me hope that with enough practice, planning, and perfecting that I too will someday become an artist someone else will fall in love with!!!

However, if you find yourself in a state of depression over your work when you spot talent, you need to snap out of it, Matilda!! The most common reason people compulsively accept the paths of others is because they don't have enough confidence in themselves, and this is tragic. This lack of confidence can keep your talent and character under a barrel unless you take steps to pull them out from under there NOW!

You'll never find yourself wanting to be in someone else's Jimmy Choos once you fully understand that you are your own person. And to be satisfied in our game, we need to "own" our own style and direction. Hang a sign over your sewing table that says: "I shall not covet the work of others" and stop playing the field. Look within, and you will find your way. Sketch, make patterns, or do anything necessary to get your groove back on - but stay off the cruise control of the internet for inspecting talent until you have a firm handle on your own!

Then, when you again allow yourself to view other people's work you should see and appreciate it, but then go on with no regrets about your own work! Artists need to see themselves as trendsetters, and when they possess their own uniqueness, they thrive.

And speaking of unique, this artist always listens to the beat of her individual drum. Continuing with our series of Meet the Shop Owners, this time we are featuring Pauline Lyngard. Pauline’s shop resides on Main Street, and is called BW Designs….read on:

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

Pauline: I live in a beautiful seaside village on the West coast of Canada, in a tiny cottage called “Redthorne” with my husband, four Italian Greyhounds and one geriatric Lilac Point Siamese cat.

By day, I am a senior payroll technician for the BC Ambulance Service. I am involved in a weekly Toastmasters Group and volunteer my time and talent for a local Greyhound rescue and adoption group.

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?

Pauline: I started years ago on EBay by selling my childhood dolls and “met” many wonderful doll collectors. I started to notice and research the doll designers and decided that since I am a fabric artist, I would be able to create my own visions for the dolls that I had…then I started to buy dolls instead of sell!

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself then transition to creating fashion art offered for sale?

Pauline: My mother taught me to sew as a child so I could make my own doll clothes. Later as a teenager, I made my own clothes and bought vintage fashions to remake them to be “my Style”. It is only “fitting” (groan, pun intended) that I have gone back to designing for dolls and rarely sew for myself.

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

Pauline: I researched the doll designers selling on EBay and noticed that many of the fabulous clothes were from Canadian designers. I really admire people like Karen Kolkman, Diana and Janet of LaBoutique, Brenda of Matisse and Angie Romanowski of BCCAN Designs. My style is so different than theirs but it encouraged me to sharpen my skills to make a more professional appearance.

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

Pauline: I love the internet for doing searches! You can find a picture of any period, style or era at the entry of a few words!

Blogmeister: For people who would like to create their own fashion art, would you have any words of inspiration or advice?

Pauline: Be true to your own style and focus on one type of doll until you establish clientele, then expand your inventory.

(I wish someone had told me this when I started!!!)

Blogmeister: Lastly, what's up for you right now?

Pauline: I’ve fallen in love with Sybarites! I find them very inspirational to design clothing and they are SO beautiful to photograph. Just looking at a Sybarite makes me happy. My design focus right now is on lingerie and accessories.

Spring has sprung in my part of the world already this year, but we don't have to wait for Spring to think about romance - or dolls. Those things, as well as fashion, are always intriguing for dollinistas like us.

Today I am happy to present to you some romantic designs that were made to satisfy what was required for a challenge given to our designers on Couture Doll Shops.

This challenge imagined that how we dress when confronted with a romantic possibility can be quite distinct.

The rules suggested it would be beautiful to breathe life back into our most romantic moment by dressing our dolls in something we had worn (or might wear in the future) to a romantic encounter.

All types of love would fit into such a scene. One could imagine a real one, or use a scene they would like to be in.

The designers could literally take this theme as far as they could imagine!

But they had to keep it couture! They were to style it beautifully, and it had to represent the story line they presented with their entry.

In other words, it had to scream romance!!

The entries have been sent in and the challenge would be over but for one more piece of business. We don't have a winner for this challenge - oh my!

Breaking news June 10, 2011 - Imagine my surprise when I opened my email to the delightful news that Isaac Mizrahi Studio’s Twitter page posted this morning: “This is making us smile today.” with a link to one of CDS' shop owner's webpages!!

They were smiling because Ina Murphey, shop owner of La Petite Fashion Promenade on Couture Court, had used Isaac Mizrahi's Poodles and Cakes line as an inspiration for a formalwear design. You see, Ina has a friend whose poodle is the very one in the picture above, so she did it to delight herself as well as her friend. Will there be more IM inspired gowns?? I guess we'll have to stay tuned and find out!!

Seeing this post, dahlings, was almost as much a thrill to me as I’m sure it was for our own, Ina Murphey!! And, as luck would have it, I had recently been privileged to do an interview with her. I had thought to run it at a later date; but why wait? We all well know about dear Isaac, now feast your eyes on the face behind the designs of this incredible shop!

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

Ina: I am married with children who have children. So I guess that makes me a grandmother—although I don’t feel old and I certainly don’t act it!

Sewing and fashion design have been my passion for as long as I can remember. Over the years, I’ve created a parade of fashions for my dolls, myself, my daughter, for private clients and for a major apparel manufacturer. Therefore, when I made the decision to design and sell clothing for the popular 16 and 22 inch fashion dolls, I chose the name “La Petite Fashion Promenade” for my business because it best describes what I create—a parade of small fashions.

Of course, the #1 fashion parade is the runway show. I’ve always loved the fashion runway—the anticipation, the excitement, the models strutting down the runway, the designers nervously awaiting the reaction of both the critics and the buying public, and of course, the people in the audience sitting on the edge of their seats to view the new colors and styles and deciding which new fashions to buy. I visualize myself as the nervous designer back stage. My dolls are the fashion models and La Petite Fashion Promenade my runway. The audience is made up of fellow doll hobbyists who “attend” my fashion shows via their home computers and decide whether or not to buy the fashions I create, photograph and parade across the pages of La Petite Fashion Promenade.

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?

Ina: My love of creating doll fashion actually began about half a century ago. As a child, I would spend hours drawing, coloring and creating new clothes for my paper dolls. When my mother would sew, I would take the fabric scraps and make clothes for my Betsy McCall doll. Those experiences actually sparked my creativity and my love for sewing and creating fashion. It also provided the catalyst for an intriguing fashion related career path!
My recent love for creating doll fashion began when I was teaching a high school fashion class in the Fall of 2005. While looking for something to use as a visual aid in class, I stumbled across the 16 inch Robert Tonner fashion dolls. I bought a few and began using them for demos and class projects. They worked magic on my students—and on me! I suddenly had a muse for all those designs in my sketch book! Wow, these gals never complained that a fitting took too long, or whined that the dress made them look fat, and they never, never, gained or lost weight that necessitated making last minute alterations!!! Then, I discovered other like-minded doll hobbyists who had blogs, participated in discussion groups and met at conventions. Some of them even traded, sold and bought stuff from each other! Once I listed and sold my first outfit, I was officially hooked!

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself then transition to creating fashion art offered for sale?

Ina: Actually, it was the other way around—I created for my dolls first, then for myself, and eventually, for the dolls again. If I go back to the “real beginning,” I first began creating fashion for my Betsy McCall doll when I was 6 years old. By the time I was in high school, I was making all my own clothes. My love of sewing and fashion led to a career that included high school and university teaching positions in fashion design, plus running my own business as a wedding planner and designer of custom bridal gowns, and even led to a job working in the design department of a major apparel manufacturer in Chicago. Once I retired, I finally had the time to create fashion for pure enjoyment and the 16 and 22 inch fashion dolls were the perfect muses.

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

Ina: My mother recognized and encouraged my early love for sewing. My grandmother and my college clothing and textiles professor taught me couture sewing techniques and turned me into a perfectionist. The late Marsha Anderle (head designer at Caron Apparel and former President of Fashion Group in Chicago) with whom I had the pleasure of working, trained my eye to “see” all the fine points of a design and then draft a pattern that would create the desired look.

Designers who have created fashions that have influenced my design style include Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Isaac Mizrahi, Coco Chanel, and Christian Dior. My good friend Jenna, recently took her standard poodle to New York to appear on the runway for Isaac Mizrahi’s fall 2011 runway show. That event actually inspired the dress titled “Pink Glitz” currently available on my website.

In the modern doll world, I would have to say that Robert Tonner has been both an influence and an inspiration. I was not the least bit surprised to learn that he had been the designer for the Blassport Collection. Bill Blass’ influence on his style and early doll fashions was very visible. When I approached him about an educational partnership with Virginia teachers, he was cordial, easy to talk to, and very helpful in setting up a program for teachers to purchase his dolls for classroom use.

Among the designers of OOAK doll fashions who have been an inspiration, I would have to include Lori Lyon of Madeline Rose Couture, and Rita of Collet-Art. Both designers create beautiful, well designed, and well constructed fashions. They, and many others too numerous to name, have created a benchmark for excellence and have welcomed newcomers, like myself, to the world of doll couture.

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

Ina: Inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere. Sometimes it is something I’ve seen on TV or in a movie, or on a passerby. Other sources of ideas are objects in nature, such as flowers, rocks, or a beautiful sunset. I also glean ideas from the best of the best, the professional fashion designers. After every fashion week in New York, Paris, or Milan, I go through the photos of the runway shows and save the best ideas in a digital file for future reference.

However, my primary sources of inspiration are the fabulous fabrics, laces and trims available today. They offer an abundance of “inspiration.” I often see a fabric, fall in love and buy it without having any idea what I am going to make from it—I let the fabric itself inspire the design.

Another source of inspiration can be a special occasion, or function, for which I need to create the perfect fashion. This inspiration source is best stated in the design theory promoted by Frank Lloyd Wright, “form follows function.” The function could be a wedding, a holiday ball, a New Year’s Eve gala, a 4th of July picnic, and so forth.

Last, but certainly not least, inspiration can sometimes come from the most unexpected places. My mistakes can sometimes prove that necessity is truly the mother of invention, aka the inspiration for creativity. The most recent notable example would be the development of my keyhole midriff. I accidently snipped a hole in the center front midriff area of a beautiful gown that was almost finished. I had put so much work into the dress that I did not want to pitch it in the trash can. After pondering over it for several hours, I decided to reinforce the fabric, cut the hole larger and put trim around it—thus creating my first “keyhole” midriff. The dress sold so fast that I have repeated the keyhole midriff on several other gowns, including the gown worn by the Fire Goddess (design winner of the CDS Fantasy to Couture Challenge).

Blogmeister: For people who would like to create their own fashion art, would you have any words of inspiration or advice?

Ina: I would give the same advice I used to give my students. Look for inspiration in the places and things you see every day. Keep a small notepad or sketch book with you at all times. When you see something you like, or get an idea, write it down or sketch it. Otherwise you will probably forget it. Also, keep an Idea Notebook. Don’t try to keep a huge stack of magazines. Clip out the good ideas and organize them in a folder or notebook.

If you are not a sewer, take a sewing class; buy a good sewing “how-to” book. I usually recommend the Reader’s Digest Sewing Book. It has great illustrations and clear, easy to understand, written instructions.

Blogmeister: Lastly, what's up for you right now?

Ina: There are two new design techniques I am working with at the moment. The first one is a group of fashions made from elegant stretch fabrics. For a long time, I resisted using stretch fabrics because of the negative environment created by an over abundance of similarly designed, unlined, and sometimes poorly constructed knit gowns. My goal has always been to provide well designed, meticulously crafted, perfectly fitted, fashions from the finest silks, laces and fabrics available. However, as each year passes, an increasing number of dolls, with an ever increasing variety of shapes and proportions, enter the market. I felt the need to develop fashions with flexible fit. Thus, I have developed a group of patterns for stretch fabrics. My flexible fit fashions are fully lined with stretch Glissenette, or swimsuit lining, and have hidden elastic and other custom developed shaping and fitting devices to give the garments a smooth fit on a variety of doll shapes.

The second design technique on my drafting table is fabric origami. About 15 years ago, I had the thrill of attending a seminar and fashion exhibition led by Japanese designer Issey Miyake. When Mr. Miyake finished his exhibition, the person sitting in the auditorium beside me leaned over and said, “I think we have just seen genius” and indeed we had! I’ve always wanted to try my hand at some of Miyaki’s techniques but did not have the time. Recently, I purchased two books detailing the construction methods used to create fashion origami. Now I am really getting anxious to complete current commitments so I can try my hand at some doll sized fashions featuring versions of a few of the techniques in the books.

New fineries available at CDS

It's that time again - time to bring ya'll up to date on what can be seen at CDS while sipping on your fine Mint Juleps on these lazy Summer afternoons in the South. And if you don't happen to be in the South, just sit back and imagine you are. After all, any doll play involves a little imagination - now doesn't it.

First in are some offerings from Lori Lyon's Madeleine Rose Couture, Main Street. This pop print charmeuse of fuchsia, black and white with a bit of purple haze styled into a sexy halter jumpsuit is just what you need for the upcoming pool party.

Coordinating bias cut skirt and black silk organza halter top complete a second look out of this beautiful fabric, and can be seen on her website.

While you're there you'll want to check out this beauty aptly titled Monarch. Butterflies of multi colors flutter across this bias cut halter gown of shimmering chiffon. A high ruffled neck frames her face. It is fully lined in white silk habotai with invisible zipper closure.

Gayle Chavez, Oohlalaz of Couture Court, has added an additional outfit from her movie costume presentation of Sucker Punch.

Come sail away with me features light blue denim and orchid pink colors, and is perfect for the the vinyls and slim resin girls as well as Ellowyne.

But you may want to leave her home when you view the movie, or risk a group of jealous fans!

One of our newest members, Deanna Torigian who is owner of Babette’s Doll Fashions on Couture Court, is busy working on a collection she is calling Summer Peach.

She plans on making dresses in this theme for several dolls, but an airy peach number is already available.

The dress is for the 18" Kitty Collier, and is made from Cotton Organdy. The bodice is double breasted, fully lined with two buttons, but it actually closes in front with silver snaps. Vintage lace adorns the bodice and skirt. Freshwater pearl earrings in peach are included - what fun!

The next stop was to visit Ina Murphey owner of La Petite Fashion Promenade on Couture Court. I was really anxious because she recently told me this season for brides was officially on! Ah, she definitely had a nice selection. Two are featured, but you'll want to see them all!

First: Trumpet silhouette gown is made of white high lustre satin. The Italian Alencon lace is hand beaded and embellished with Aurora Borealis sequins. The gown has a built-in crinoline to support and maintain the silhouette and is lined with white taffeta. It has a center back snap-fastener closure. A two tiered veil cascades from the headpiece of silk and satin ribbon flowers. It is designed to fit over most hair styles. The earrings are made of Swarovski AB crystals and seed beads. This ensemble includes gown, headpiece with veil, bouquet, necklace and earrings.

Next: The satin in this elegant gown has two-way stretch and thus will fit most 16 inch fashion dolls. The Alencon lace is embellished with AB sequins and crystals and heavily beaded. Both gown and short sleeve shrug are fully lined with two way stretch lining. Gown has a built-in crinoline to support the silhouette of the gown. All of my wedding gown ensembles are one-of-a-kind original designs. The ensemble includes gown, shrug, headpiece with veil, and silk floral bouquet.

What eye candy – and I still had one more stop. I am trying to interview the shop owners as time allows. I did manage to get an interview from Lori Lyons on here, but now I need to get with it again. I figured I better touch base with Elisa Cetera next because I knew she and her family were usually busy in the summer. Elisa is the owner of Petra Elise Fashion Doll Couture on Main Street – read on for some insight on this very talented lady.

Blogmeister: Who are you? In other words - tell us a little bit about the real person behind your business name?

Elisa: Who am I? For the last 12 years, I have been a stay-at-home mom of three girls---Aislynn, now 14; Kaylie, now 12; and Sheridan, soon to be 9. I've spent a lot of my time volunteering at school, working as a co-leader for a girl scout troop, and sewing. Now that my girls are older, I'm not volunteering at school anymore – instead I have enrolled in classes for myself that should help me better develop my craft and how I present it through photography. My husband Kenny is a singer/musician, and I also spend a lot of time helping him with his promotion activities and website. My daughter Kaylie has developed an interest in fashion dolls as well, and as time permits in her busy schedule, I am teaching her to sew. She attended IFDC with me last year, and it was really excited to share my passion for dolls with her.

Blogmeister: How and when did you discover your love for creating fashion art in the doll world?

Elisa: I've always loved fashion dolls--I was the youngest, and only daughter in a family full of boys, so I spent hours, and hours playing with Barbie. I was inspired by a friend's work to try my hand at sewing in the 1/6 scale in the fall of 2008. My beloved kitty Oscar had just passed away at 18 1/2 years old, and I was looking for something to occupy my mind. I was warned that it was addictive---and it truly is! I had some patterns that I had purchased years ago, thinking I would sew some outfits for my daughter's dolls (but they never really developed a passion for dolls of any kind---quite a shock to me, as I thought with 3 girls I'd have lots of dolls in my life!). I quickly started searching ebay and online for more patterns. I like complex and well designed fashions so the basic craft patterns one can get at the fabric store are not too appealing to me. Within a couple of months, I was selling my fashions on eBay, and participating on the doll boards. In early 2009 I created my website, and signed up for my first doll convention, the IFDC.

From Fantasy to Reality

Blogmeister: Did you begin creating for yourself then transition to creating fashion art offered for sale?

Elisa: I started sewing in high school--a senior year home economics class. I took to it right away, and ended up making a very glamorous satin gown with a boned bustier and full under train of lace and tulle, which I wore to my senior prom, and was asked to model in a fashion show one of my classmates was having as part of a senior talent show. My sewing skills stalled a bit after that, although I continued to sew and did a lot of cross stitch and silk ribbon embroidery.

When my oldest daughter was born, I discovered heirloom sewing. Initially I learned thru reading books, but as my interest grew, I started taking classes. I became friends with the lady who owned the little fabric store I shopped at, and she suggested I attend one of her SAGA (Smocking Arts Guild of America) meetings. I had never smocked before, but I loved the dresses I saw at the meeting, so I joined the guild. At that point, I was also doing embroidery work for a Los Angeles wedding gown designer, L'ezu Atelier and had an online shop for bridal accessories that I made myself. I joined the artisan program offered by SAGA, and quickly spent most of my free time making little smocked baby and toddler dresses, as well has hand-embroidered day gowns and fancy Easter dresses, both for my own daughters, and commissions for other people.

We moved to a new community, and started attending the local fair in the summer. I decided to enter some of my work, and was thrilled when I won a ribbon for every piece. Almost every year after that I entered several pieces, winning numerous 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons. Eventually I won two Judges Choice ribbons, a Best of Division ribbon, and came in 3rd place in the Sweepstakes Award. My daughters have enjoyed extravagant Halloween costumes over the years, as I really enjoy the creative freedom costumes present. Now that my daughters are too old for smocked dresses, it is the perfect time to transition to fashion doll art.

Blogmeister: Was anything or anyone a significant influence on your work initially?

Elisa: Yes! I had become friends with Tula, of Tallulahbelle thru my fabric sales as I have sold silk fabric remnants and scraps on eBay for years. We started trading photos of our work--my heirloom children's outfits, and her fashion doll ensembles. I was truly amazed at the work she did. At first I thought, I could never do that!, but Tula encouraged me to give it a try and has been a true mentor to me both as a designer of doll fashion, and by welcoming me into the wonderful world of the doll collector. I have been truly blessed to have found such a wonderful friend, and inspiration!

Blogmeister: Today where do you find inspiration for your projects?

Elisa: I truly enjoy, and am inspired by the work of the amazing artists in the doll world: Tallulahbelle, Matisse, Lori Lyon, Made In Paris…to name just a few. I am encouraged by their work, and continue to strive to improve my own skills. I also spend a lot of time looking at websites featuring vintage fashions as I love the fit, and attention to detail. Many times it is the fabric itself that speaks to me--when I look at, or handle a piece of fabric, I can envision it in a fashion. Because I have so much fabric, I often will sketch out whatever idea has occurred to me for a particular piece, and then I store the drawing with the fabric until I am able to work on it.

Blogmeister: For people who would like to create their own fashion art, would you have any words of inspiration or advice?

Glam Girl

Elisa: Follow your heart and give it a try--if you have limited sewing skills, look into taking some sewing classes at your local community college. You should participate in some of the doll boards--there are many wonderful doll designers, both those that sell their work, and those that do it for fun, who will answer questions, and give you good tips to help improve your fashion art. Many people seem to think that sewing for dolls is much more difficult than sewing for people, but it really isn't. And dolls don't wiggle, or complain that something itches!

Blogmeister: Lastly, what's up for you right now?

Elisa: I'll be attending the IFDC and Integrity conventions. I'm also going to be offering an IFDC exclusive at my sales table, and an exclusive to my ftk list via my website newsletter in conjunction with the IFDC. I will also be offering this exclusive to the CDS ftk list. The idea for that is for people who can't attend IFDC to be able to enjoy something exclusive too--- so same pattern as IFDC exclusive, different version. I just got the yummy new silk brocades in for this --- two patterns in several colorways. One set will go to IFDC, one set for the ftk exclusive. I hope to be very busy when I get home from convention!!

Sounds like she will, doncha think? And I know others are busy getting some wonderful new things for their shops ready So be patient, and check back often - you won't know what we have new unless you stop in from time to time like I did.

What's Cooking?, this lovely scenario presented by Tres Chic Boutique, to me, demonstrates what many remember as a stay at home Mom.

Most countries including the USA, Australia, Canada, and India celebrate Mother's Dy on the seind Sunday of May. Mother's Day is celebrated to honor all mothers and to express gratitude for the hardships some must bear to bring up a child.

Happy Wedding - and who is Sarah Burton??

The 36-year-old designer. Sarah Burton, has already been under an extreme amount of pressure after taking over the responsibilities at the House of McQueen. But no one can deny this designer reigns supreme today with a gorgeous wedding gown that, to me, resembles the beautiful concoction Grace Kelly worn for her own momentous occasion in Monaco.

Sarah's journey since she initially interviewed with McQueen in 1996 has provided enough work to keep several designers busy. Through it all she's remained loyal and daring. though - having not only stayed with the House of McQueen since being hired there - but by also pulling off the founder's collection with a panache' that made critics approve.
She's oh so very popular too - even celebs like Lady Gaga have worn her designs. And now, of course, rumored job offers will probably reach a fever pitch. But those in the know, are speculating she could end up at Dior, working in Galliano's place. No matter where she goes, it will be most interesting chronicling the life of this talented designer!

Oh, and about that happy couple...May you always be happy and blessed in your romantic journey!

And may your gown influence dolly weddings for many years to come. Psst.....anyone notice that wonderful white number worn by sis, Pippa??

Congrats go to Terry Barner for winning our Pop Culture At the Movies Challenge.

Terry stumbled into doll makeovers many years ago beginning with "rescue" dolls. He loves to paint, create, sew and, in general, try to keep his hands busy. He has won awards for some projects, but the enjoyment of creating is a treasure in itself, he feels.

Off the Wall byTerrkat is the name of his shop that is located on the newest street on Couture Doll Shops, Designer Drive. There you will find many one of a kind doll makeovers, fashions. and accessories for your discriminating doll. Doll customization is an ongoing passion for Terry. Sometimes something is created that may not fit in with the project it was intended for, but is still really neat so you will find some of these “finds” on his website also. Terry invites you to visit his shop often as his iinventory is ever changing.

This winning entry was based on Hayley Atwell from the Captain America: The First Avenger movie. The muse is a repainted Vita. She has a military themed outfit, but not one you would find on the front lines. as it is a little "hotter." You can be sure this feisty lady is ready to lead a battalion if necessary to make sure Captain America comes home safe!

But, finally, here we are again with the CDS news, and I cannot wait to see what wonderful new designs the crew has come up with!! I think we all could use a little shopping therapy, don't you??

There are definitely lots of new opportunities. We have welcomed soooooooo many new people it's hard to keep up! Did you know that Steven Fraser of Dressmaker Details has a large cornerstone shop on Designer Drive now? We also have welcomed an OOAK artist, Dolly's Dolls, who may be new to Couture Court, but whohas been active on a certain auction site for some time.

We also have had four people build new websites in our free class, and we'll have one more coming on board soon who is working away to get his shop finished just right. We are really becoming international now. Our new people include the Russian winner of the Couture Doll Design Challenge, Yana Emelyanova; our first member from France, Rosy Bazile; from Canada is a great knitter and pattern maker, Karen Daniel; and those who collect the little dolls may want to check out the new shop by Elizabeth Fenton from the USA. As soon as Carl Wicham finishes building his site you will have yet another place to get your knitwear - and some of his items also features beading!

Oh, and be sure to pick up the Fantasy issue of FDQ. In there you will see the contestants from our Fantasy contest show what kinds of things they happened to imagine. And, speaking of contestants, I am finally to the part where I can actually show you some of the new things our artists came up with for the latest challenge. Grab your popcorn, kiddos, and read on!

It looks like plenty of our action figures are going to burst on the widescreen this summer! There are going to be so many sequels plus new movies that it will be hard to pick just one to visit or revisit! But that is just what our shop owners did who took our Pop Culture At The Movies challenge!

Each of them had to come up with a contemporary view of the clothing a character in one of these movies would actually be able to wear out in public. So obviously it could not be a costume, and to fit into Couture Doll Shops, it would have to have a couture flare!

A total of ten brave souls took up the challenge. Three designers were influenced by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Ahoy, Mateys, I believe this one was influenced by Mr. Depp himself!

ENTRY NUMBER 5

It's hard to resist the Pirates call....especially when they are played by such delightful characters.

Yes, Johnny Depp will be on hand as usual, but this time, he'll have a female character with him played by Penelope Cruz. Looks like this artist was leaning more toward designing for her!

ENTRY NUMBER 6

Many of you might remember, this is not the first time these two have graced the big screen together.They did a little movie called Blow a few years back that you might remember.
I don't think that's anything this designer had in mind though - this doll is channeling Penelope's softer side thanks to the work of her artist. ENTRY NUMBER 2

Others chose newly introduced action flicks. This entry took inspiration from X-Men: First Class. January Jones' character had a lot more going for her clothes-wise than Mystique ever did!

ENTRY NUMBER 3

The artist who took on Green Lantern felt that if you've seen one skin tight jumpsuit after another, you might prefer something a lot different.

The character played by Blake Lively, Carol Ferris, would be ready for fun at any party in this ensemble that might just leave you green with envy!.

ENTRY NUMBER 8

Captain America: The First Avenger is a not-so-gentle reminder that he was stomping out crime and more than a few Nazis during the first World War. Aren't we happy his sweetie Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell, has a much more hot uniform then they did way back when.

ENTRY NUMBER 1

I'm not sure I'll be going to see Sucker Punch. I have a hard time imagining that several beautiful women could end up in a not very nice insane asylum! But this artist had no trouble putting together an appropriate ensemble for Emily Browning's character of Baby Doll for a popular doll like Ellowyne. It's rumored this artist has also developed outfits for the other lovelies in this crazy movie

ENTRY NUMBER 4

There were three designers influenced by the new Thor movie. Two formed a team who brought both a furniture piece influenced by the decor of the days of Thor, and an ensemble that Natalie Portman playing Jane Foster would be quite comfortable in!

ENTRY NUMBER 7

The Thor movie was the only one that gave an artist the desire to create clothing for a male character.

I can only say that if he takes off his sun glasses I swear I will swoon! Oh, and I'm also glad this artist was savvy enough to develop just the right look for this modern day Thor!

ENTRY NUMBER 10

No one was brave enough to tackle Cowboys and Aliens!! I guess that was because they were all very serious about the challenge.

But there was one artist beating to a very different drum. Their choice was the zany, new comedy, Bridesmaids - action figures weren't even a consideration for Maya Rudolph's Lillian.

ENTRY NUMBER 9

Yes, we're having a Scavenger Hunt online, and we're not going to be fuddy duds about it! We've never done this before...but isn't that what first times are all about!?!

We only have two rules - after all we want to make this fun!

Rules:

Everyone can play except CDS members. One entry per person.

That was easy enough!! Now cuddle up and grab your coffee, tea, or hot chocolate -- next is the really fun part. I'm going to going over what you'll be playing for if you decide to join in.

Three lucky winners will win all the prizes. This is what each winner will receive:

HOW TO PLAY

We're going to test your knowledge of our shops. If you frequent CDS you should be ahead in this game!

What you'll need to do is study our symbols that are pictured in numbered order below. You will use the clue under each symbol's picture to find the shop each symbol is in. Some clues are easy; some a little hard - but they all relate to the shop or shop owner in some way. Accumulate the most symbols, make an entry listing them all and the title of the shop you found each in, and you will have a chance to win!

Take some time to review the symbols and clues listed next. You might even want to print them out to help you in your search.

Kari Stackhouse: "Puppy Love" by Très Chic Boutique features Poppy. She is still awaiting her Prince Charming, so her heart belongs to her special pooch this Valentine's Day. Her cute cotton print dress is fully lined and finished, and is belted at the waist. Included is a Valentine "treat" for her pup. (Note: The puppy is not included.)

Ina Murphey: This Valentine ensemble includes a candy pink strapless sheath dress with hearts down the center front. The heart at the top of the bodice is beaded with silver lined glass beads. Also included are matching pantyhose with dots of silver glitter and a white faux fur stole. The dress is modeled by and fitted to Tonner’s Antoinette and will also fit the Deva Dolls.

Gayle Chavez: I'm going against all the things my mother taught me. Here's a Valentine from a girl of the 21st century.The Lolita style I embrace because it brings a tiny smirk to my face.

Lori Lyon: A delicious concoction of candy pink silk charmeuse. It is bias cut to drape and swirl around luscious curves, "Be Mine" features a one shoulder gown with deep wine velvet bows and red, red blossoms accenting the shoulder..

Peggy Burney: Bodice is a haltered bustier made of silk, and embellished with hand applied sequins. Flirty skirt and wrap is taffeta. Wrap may be removed for another look. For more pictures check out my website.

Maril Adrian: She’s a "Heartbreaker" in her flirty little cotton frock. The form-fitting black bodice features lime green saddle stitching. and a black leather band set with red rhinestones focuses on her fabulous figure. The top is lined with fine white cotton batiste. The asymmetrical skirt features a red hearts and roses print on a black background, embellished with lime green satin ribbon and a fluffy black net and lace underskirt. Her green ribbon arm bandage is as close as she’ll ever get to wearing her heart on her sleeve.

Phyllis Erlenbusch: Evangeline hopes to catch Mortimer's eye on Valentine's Day with this hot pink silk charmeuse gown styled after early 20th century fashions. The sleeves and removable overskirt shimmer with silver micro sequins on pale grey net. The fit is loose, so Evangeline's slightly larger cousins might wish to borrow this flowing gown.

Connie Casteel: Fairyland Little Fee Leah is modeling the dress she will wear for her Valentine's lunch date with Grandma and Teddy! Her mauve dress is printed with vining hearts, accented with pink and white stripes, and features a removable heart lace accent under the bust. Completing her ensemble are lace trimmed bloomers and white knit stockings.

Karen Kilgoar: "Unforgettable" is a lush dress made from red dupioni silk. fully lined with a silky white poly fabric. It closes with a hand-sewn zipper in the back. This dress was made from a Designs by Jude pattern that was slightly modified. Doll and shoes are not included. Step up and claim this red hot find.

Fantasy Fashion - What is It and is it for me??

To simply dismiss any fantasy from your doll's wardrobe would be like a rich woman snubbing many designs that come down the runways today. You may not find this Gaultier number pictured to your taste...but then again, maybe you might! Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder - so who is to say any fashion, done appealingly and with wonderous fabrics, would not appeal to you??

To test this theory, our CDS shop owners were given their latest challenge called Fantasy Meets Couture. They were asked to give a version of their outfit that would be suitable for a fantasy being, and another version that could be worn by the fashionista we all have come to know our dolls to be.

No picture or any other indicator was given of who or what they should use as their inspiration. In other words, each participant had to pull this creation out of their imagination. For some this proven daunting; others squealed with joy at the prospect of such a fine challenge. In the end nine entries came forth to claim the prize!! Want to know what they are playing for?

The prizes for this challenge are provided by Angelic Dreamz Doll Shop and CDS. The winner of this challenge will be receiving this J-Doll by JUN Planning titled RUE DE CHARONNE. Her inventors imagined her as someone who would just know "something beautiful may be found...on the street corner in Paris." Standing at approximately 11" she is made of vinyl and fully articulated. And, she comes with her shoulder bag, a hat, and her doll stand.

She was selected because she's the type of doll client CDS is used to - smart, saavy, and beguiling. We also wanted to give a nod to those who design and buy for the smaller fashion dolls. We hope she'll result in many new designs from our winner!

AND our FTKers will get a chance, through our drawing , to win a fantasy doll of their own - they have been notified which doll it will be on our Yahoo Group which one can join here.

But, as promised, anyone can vote for the entries in this challenge. They can be seen and voted on all day Friday, January 7 and Saturday, January 8 until 10 p.m. CST - but they can continue to be viewed all weekend. The winner and our drawing winner will be announced here on our blog Sunday, January 9.

We would honestly like to have the person who fulfilled the challenge win this and all our challenges, so for that reason we politely ask you not to vote as if this was a popularity contest.
